Services > National Screening Unit Audits

In a move to improve health and reduce health inequalities, the Ministry of Health’s National Screening Unit has introduced some screening programmes. Two of these are:

National Cervical Screening Programme (NCSP)
The aim of this programme is to reduce the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer by routinely screening an entire defined population at regular intervals.

BreastScreen Aotearoa
The aim of this programme is to reduce women’s morbidity and mortality from breast cancer by identifying cancers at an early stage.

Lead Provider Auditor
IANZ has been appointed by the Ministry of Health as the Lead Provider Auditor for the above National Screening Unit programmes and, in 2005, began assessing service providers throughout New Zealand. The initial audits, to be conducted over three years, will provide assurance to the National Screening Unit of:

  • Compliance with National Screening Unit contracts, and with policy and quality standards
  • High quality services are being maintained
  • Continuous quality improvement
  • Safety, effectiveness, accessibility, equitability and efficiency of services
  • Maori and Pacific women participation
  • Emphasis is placed on development and education
  • Improvement in the level of conformity to specified requirements
  • Good performance of providers.
