The Accreditation Council was established as a statutory body in 1972 under the then Testing Laboratory Registration Act 1972, and continues to fulfil its statutory functions today under the Standards and Accreditation Act 2015. It operates as a user funded autonomous Crown Entity under the Crown Entities Act 2004.

The Accreditation Council trades as IANZ for its accreditation activities. It also has a training division where it trades as the New Zealand Quality College (NZQC) and subsidiary certification body, Telarc Limited.
